NFL Stadium Shapes Maps
NFL Stadium Shapes with PNG shapes (Figure 11-8)
This map is a map of the NFL stadium's with PNG files used as shapes. For this map, we used png images to represent the domed, open, and retractable stadium types. We used a dark background for this map to allow the shapes to "pop out." Ryan Facks - zID 2027325
NFL Stadium Circle Shapes, Light Backgorund, and Annotations (Figure 11-9)
This map is a map of the NFL stadium's with simple circle shapes indicating domed, open, and retractable roofs. This map uses a lighter background than the one above and also applies annotations to "callout" teams that are clustered too close together. Ryan Facks - zID 2027325
Discussion: Figure Ground Relationship
Figure ground relationship is a type of perceptual grouping that allows users to recognize objects more clearly. The figure is the shape used to display data and the ground is the background context of the map. The goal is for the user to not have to work too hard to find the data trying to be presented. To do this, we use contrast, layering, isolation of data, and sizing and shpes. For both maps, the shapes are of uniform size, but the background is drastically different. For the first map, the color of the pngs we used to represent the three stadium types helps for the symbols to "pop" because of the contrast between the green and black. For the second map, we simply used a white background with black circles which contrast greatly. However, for the second map we needed to rely on annotations to help callout some of the overlapping data points as we could not rely on default labels alone. In both maps we use very simplified shapes which assists us in clear, simplistic, discrete map layout and these simple layouts help us create the constrasting relationship between our figures and ground. The annotations allow us to make sure our data is still legible against the "ground" of our map in the second map. Personally, I prefer the first map (the dark background) because I am a very visual person and the color contrast assists me in map comprehension. Ryan Facks - zID 2027325
